Type both on the first screen, then click Join class. Or click Play solo to explore on your own.

To keep your progress between lessons, set a password on the first screen and tick create my account the first time. Use the same name and password next lesson and your vocabulary, errands and money come back. Leave the password blank and nothing is saved.

Read this before you unzip

Windows marks everything downloaded from the internet, and that mark spreads to every file you unzip out of it — which is what makes “Windows protected your PC” appear. Clear it once on the zip and it never appears at all:

  1. Right-click the downloaded zip → Properties.
  2. At the bottom, tick Unblock → OK. (If there's no Unblock box, there's nothing to do — skip ahead.)
  3. Now unzip it, and run SliceOfLife.exe.

Already unzipped and seeing the warning? Click More info on the dialog — it looks like plain text, but it's a link — then Run anyway.

Windows shows this for any program without a code-signing certificate. It is not a virus warning and says nothing about the file itself.

Getting it running

  1. Keep SliceOfLife.exe and SliceOfLife.pck in the same folder — the game won't start without both.
  2. Double-click SliceOfLife.exe.
  3. Pick Join class or Play solo.

Speaking your answers

You can play the whole game by typing pinyin — tones optional, spacing ignored. wo yao liang ge baozi and woyaoliangebaozi are both accepted.

To speak instead, run install-speech.bat once. It needs Python from python.org — tick Add python.exe to PATH when installing. The first time you speak, a 460 MB model downloads.

If the microphone hears nothing: check it isn't muted in Windows (a muted mic still looks fine in settings), then press O in game to pick a device and watch the level bar.
